Papua New Guinea, Ukarumpa

I checked out a book about Papua New Guinea this week from the library. Here are some facts I found interesting about PNG as I read the book. PNG is the size of California but has over 830 different languages.

Ukarumpa where we may live someday

Hence the need for aviation

Volcanoes are common in PNG

Madang , PNG where we will go to language school
The temperatures in the lowlands is about 90 degrees Fahrenheit year round and in the highlands where will be living it is about 72-77 degrees.  It only has two seasons wet and dry. The rainy season is rainiest during the summer months of June - August. Madang where will be going to language training for four months , is called one of the most beautiful places on the Pacific . The longest road in PNG is only 380 miles . Their is no border patrol between PNG and Indonesia and is controlled often by Indonesian guerillas. People who cause crimes in PNG are referred to as rascals. PNG's gov't is democratic but most people do not vote since they live so remote in the jungle and probably aren't aware voting exists. Most of PNG is run by tribal mentality  and women are only valued as property. Direct eye contact is non existent in PNG unless trying to be provacative. ( good to know) Handshakes are a common greeting and other public displays of affection are limited to inside the house and family relations. I am not quite finished reading the book but I thought these were interesting as well as some pictures I found online.
